The vision for Coil began when I was looking for a new guitar with a handful of must-have features, basically a combination of all my favorite guitars:

  1.    Multi-tone circuits (series, parallel, single-coil)

  2.    Neck-through construction

  3.    Ebony fretboard

  4.    24 frets

  5.    Cool inlays using real abalone or mother of pearl

  6.    A nice-looking wood top

Blew me away when I could find almost nothing fitting the bill for less than $2000.  So I spent two years designing what I wanted and talking with firms who could do the woodworking for me at a decent price.  I recruited a bunch of fellow engineers from UMCP who rock and who improved my designs tenfold and added a few designs of their own.

The final result: Coil Guitars.

Coil’s  mission is to deliver the highest-end guitars & electronics that we can imagine … and we can imagine quite a lot.  See the list above: you’ll find those features in every guitar we sell.  We only build guitars that we would play, and when you look through our galleries, you’ll see we only play good stuff.

Our philosophy is that better tone starts at the beginning: in the guitar itself.  There is no amount of effects you can use to get a convincingly big, fat tone, if it isn’t already there in the guitar.  If we can make a guitar that sounds amazing without any special tricks or processing or effects, then we’ve done our job.  That’s what we have achieved, and so most of the sound samples on the site have no processing on them whatsoever—so you can hear the guitar’s pure, unadulterated tone.  We think you’ll like it.
